SERVICE serves my heart.
As an educator, mom, and guest to the cultures that welcome us, I feel gratitude that my role as a teacher connects me to the community. My family, students, and friends dig in. I've only been in Ghana a year so our family had to start fresh with building relationships but here's what year one looked like for us.

Community Support

COMMIT TO SERVICE
Play Please!
As varsity boy's basketball coach, my husband Mark arranged games and got his players to help volunteer at the DUNK site.
ES students and their families joined on Saturdays and took the lead on the Urban Garden aspects.
My daughters worked with local carpenters to lead the chess building and playing aspect.
Mo Awudu, professional local graffiti artist donated his time and energy .
Kwame Write, local musician and poet coordinated the music elements.
How can DUNK and LCS team to create a sustainable and inspiring creative space to make art, music, and play together?

Our Process

Step One: Youth Summit
Bring 100 international and local teens together to decide what they both value most. This became the theme for the project and made students responsible for its momentum.

Step Two: Raise Community Support
Students broke into teams to plan how to raise funds, get donations, begin recycling campaigns, and prepare the site.

Step Three:
The fun part! Spend three school days and three weekend days painting, making chess boards, and hanging out with kids of all ages, parents, and local graffiti artists. Write lyrics, learn drumming, and perform with a local musician.
